Throughout the Netherlands back roads and cycle paths fringe patchwork fields of brilliant flowers and apple–green meadows. They cross canals over wooden bridges and wind through cheerful towns. Bridges lift while small boats float by. Bicycles are dearly loved and revered. Designated, off-road cycle-paths web cities, towns and countryside. The Dutch museum collections are world-famous and the variety of classical and innovative music and art festivals is extensive. On the globe, the Netherlands is but a speck, but in world history the Dutch have played a part way out of proportion to their country’s size. Camping is popular. Campgrounds are modern and many bake their own delicious bread daily. Roadways are excellent and well signposted.
